Australian motor vehicle first aid kit
Share
Australian businesses and workplaces have a legal obligation to provide first aid for their workers.
Workplace first aid kit design and contents are based on a risk assessment of the nature of the work, the hazards, size, location and nature of the workplace, and the number and composition of the workers there.
A motor vehicle first aid kit is essential for any mobile worker who uses a car, taxi, ute, van, bus, 4WD, motor bike or other motor transport to do their job.
Australian workplace health and safety inspectors can enter your business at any time to check your compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws. As a person conducting a business or undertaking, it’s your responsibility to provide access to a suitable and well-stocked motor vehicle first aid kit for all your mobile workers at all times.
Failing to provide a safe Australian workplace leaves you liable to fines up to $800,000 and possible prison time. Your business can be forced to close.
Brenniston National Standard makes it easy for you to choose the right first aid kit for any Australian workplace. Under the Brenniston National Standard, every Brenniston workplace first aid kit is designed to the guidelines of the Australian Work Health and Safety Act Code of Practice, ‘First Aid in the Workplace’ to assure compliance.
Brenniston National Standard Motor Vehicle First Aid Kit ensures you have the right kit for your mobile workers wherever they are in Australia.

Car first aid kit design
Workplace first aid kits come in various designs.
A flip-top box or hard plastic container is not ideal for a car first aid kit or other motor vehicle. Hard edges increase the risk of injury as it can be thrown around the cabin of a motor vehicle in a collision.
A soft nylon carry bag decreases the risk of projectile injury. It’s also easy to store in a glovebox, behind or under a car seat, or in a vehicle’s boot.
Choose a quality kit made with durable materials. Safe Work Australia recommends a kit made with materials that will protect contents from dust, moisture and contamination.
Internal, easy to access compartments allow fast response in any emergency.
What should be in a car first aid kit?
In a motor vehicle accident, you only have minutes to act.
Look for a quality car first aid kit with premium first aid items to treat minor injuries common to motor vehicle accidents, to ensure your workers and others are safe.
Whether they’re travelling to a meeting, delivering goods to a customer or transporting passengers, if your worker witnesses or experiences a roadside emergency they may be able to provide or apply critical first aid.
A properly stocked and up-to-date first aid kit prepares your workers to treat minor roadside injuries and help with larger emergency situations they may encounter while doing their job.
Essential first aid items in a motor vehicle first aid kit
Antiseptic, gauze, dressings and bandages are the basic must-have first aid items in a motor vehicle first aid kit.
The kit should also contain a quick guide to emergency first aid with step-by-step instructions on how to treat injuries.
What else should be in a motor vehicle first aid kit?
As well as essential first aid items, a well-stocked and ready-to-use first aid kit should cover a range of emergencies and injuries with additional items like disposable gloves, burn gel, accident blanket and triangular bandage.
A triangular bandage has multiple uses depending on the injury or emergency. It can be used as an immobilisation sling, pressure pad for bleeding, general support pad or to hold dressings in place.
A disposable resuscitation face shield and plastic contaminant bags should also be included in the event of acute medical emergencies like cardiac arrest, choking or accidental amputation.

Restocking and maintaining a car first aid kit
A workplace safety manager or first aider is responsible for restocking and maintaining a workplace first aid kit.
They should monitor usage of the first aid kit and ensure items used are replaced as soon as practicable.
Regular checks should also be carried out after each use. If the kit is not used, checks should occur at least once every six months to ensure the kit contains a complete set of the required items. A contents list in the kit should be signed and dated after each check.
Items should be checked that they’re in working order, not deteriorated and within their expiry dates. Sterile products should remain sealed and untampered.
